Canine Cognition Clinics for all disciplines and sports. These clinics are based on the research Cameron Ford of Ford K9 and Brian Hare have conducted with Duke University.

The Duke University Canine Cognition Center is dedicated to the study of dog cognition. Founded in 2009, it was the first on campus center of its kind in the United States. It’s goal is to understand the flexibility and limitations of dog cognition and how it compares to other animals, including our closest living relatives, the great apes.

Doing so can help us understand how our own minds evolved, since over the past decade, they have found that dog and human minds converge in astounding ways.

Understanding the dog mind will help us support dogs in their many jobs in society, from being a part of the family, to bomb detection, to assisting people with disabilities. She has run these tests for Police, Search and Rescue, Assistance dogs and many other groups.

Georgie has a rich background in many different scent based disciplines, having started her training in operational work over 10 years ago. These Cognition tests help you learn crucial information such as, is your dog strong in memory, is the dog a problem solver, how quick does it make inferences?

Additional things these tests show are, does the dog easily follow gestural communication and how well can it focus. These tests are proven to reduce failure rates in selecting detection dogs for operational programs and also speed up the training process because the trainers are able to understand the requirements of each individual dog.

In conjunction with the normal K9 selection and evaluation steps agencies use, adding these K9 Brain games to an evaluation raises the percentage of dogs successfully picked to be working K9’s.

Before using these tests the Navy Seals Dog Unit found that only 43% of dogs were making it through to deployment. After using these tests, this percentage increased to 76%!

They also has a 30% reduction in training time.

Using these tests have proven to increase selection percentages of the right dogs for a training program. If you do Nose/Scent work, the information from these games will help you understand your dog better and how to set up training sessions that get the most out of your dog.

Just knowing if your dog is right or left brain dominant can make a big difference to how you search an area.

These tests aren’t just for detection though, they would help you in all sports, including trailing, agility, obedience, gundog work, the list is endless, to have a better understanding of how your dog learns is such a valuable asset.
